4 Sexy Reasons You Need Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage

Okay.  Maybe not sexy, but definitely important.  Anyway, now that I’ve got your attention, YOU NEED UNINSURED MOTORIST INSURANCE COVERAGE!  Want to know why?  Read on weary traveler.  Read on.

1.  It’s like buying liability insurance for the deadbeat uninsured driver that caused your wreck.  Whoa!!  Wait just a minute.  Why should I have to pay for somebody else to have car insurance, you may be thinking.  Mine is expensive enough.  I sure don’t want to pay for some stranger’s insurance too!  Why didn’t he buy his own insurance??

Good questions, all.  The sad truth is that some people just don’t obey the law.  It’s as simple as that.  Georgia law says they must have liability insurance, but they don’t, either because they’re just irresponsible, or they don’t have the money, or they just don’t respect the law.  It’s these uninsured deadbeats, about 1 out of every 7 drivers on the road, that cause huge amounts of damage to innocent people and never have to pay a penny to compensate the victims.  Without uninsured motorist insurance coverage, you could end up being one of these poor souls.

2.  Uninsured motorist insurance is relatively cheap.  Sexy enough for you?

3.  Uninsured motorist insurance covers you even if you are not in a vehicle.  Say what?  Here’s an example.  Suppose you’re walking down the sidewalk, and a drunk driver negligently loses control and runs over you.  Suppose the drunk driver does not have any liability insurance on her car.  Suppose you have medical bills and lost wages because of your injuries.  You’re just out of luck because you weren’t in your car when you got hurt, right.  Wrong!  Now here’s the good part.  The uninsured motorist insurance on your car covers you because the motorist that injured you was uninsured.  That’s all there is to it!  You don’t have to be in your car for your uninsured motorist insurance to apply!  Instead of walking down the sidewalk, what if you had been riding a bicycle when the drunk driver ran over you?  Same result!  Your uninsured motorist insurance would apply, and you would have a source of insurance coverage to pay for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering!

4.  Uninsured motorist insurance is stackable.

JMM_0564What the heck does that mean?  Stackable means that policies can be added together, or stacked, to increase the total amount of uninsured motorist insurance available to you.  Want to hear more?  Suppose, in the last example, you lived in the same home as your adult sister and adult brother.  Your sister has uninsured motorist insurance on her car.  Your brother has uninsured motorist insurance on his car.  You have uninsured motorist insurance on your car.  As long as each of you has a separate insurance policy, you are covered by all three policies, and the total amount of coverage available to you is determined by adding the three policies together.  So, if your policy has $100,000.00 in uninsured motorist insurance coverage, your sister’s policy has $50,000.00 in uninsured motorist insurance coverage, and your brother’s policy has $25,000.00 in uninsured motorist insurance coverage, you have $175,000.00 in coverage available to you for things like medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering caused by an uninsured driver!

In Georgia, every automobile insurance policy is required to have uninsured motorist insurance in it UNLESS you reject the coverage IN WRITING.  Don’t reject it!  And make sure you buy the “add-on” coverage and not the “traditional,” or “reduced” coverage.  Be safe!
